How to Go to Ngong Ping by Cable Car - Ngong Ping 360

Ngong Ping Cable Car Terminal

I've been missing Hong Kong a lot and I realized I have not written much about that trip apart from the Hong Kong Trail Hiking Guides. I was still young during that trip and to me, the Hong Kong Trail guides are all I need for my blog. I was wrong and wished I had taken it more seriously.

However, there's no point in crying over spilled milk. Instead, let me at least have one blog entry from that trip. Here, I will help you how to go to Ngong Ping by Cable Car - Ngong Ping 360! I'm sure we all visualize riding that glass-bottom cabin cable car when we hear Ngong Ping right?

Best Way to Go to Ngong Ping - Cable Car!

Ngong Ping is a landmark located on Lantau Island. Similar to Hong Kong Disneyland, it is a famous day trip from the city. There are multiple ways to go to Ngong Ping, but the most scenic way to go is by the Cable Car called Ngong Ping 360.

With its panoramic glass windows and floors (on its Crystal Cabins), you can enjoy a picturesque journey on the way to Ngong Ping!

Directions - Going to Ngong Ping from the City

Since this trip happened more than 2 years ago, I am slightly confused about which MTR Station I changed lines (since I needed to change train line). But let me still help you to the best of my ability. From my own experience and where I stayed (near Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Station), this is how I went:

  1. I took the train on Tsuen Wan Line towards Central.
  2. From Central, I walked towards Hong Kong MTR Station to change lines.
  3. Then I took the Tung Chung Line to reach Tung Chung Station.
  4. Upon reaching the station, I went out of the station and walked for about 5 minutes toward the Cable Car Terminal.

Another suggestion from Google Maps is below:

    1. Take a train station towards Central Station, Nam Cheong Station, or Lai King Station.
    2. From any of these stations, change the line to Tung Chung Line and take the train towards Tung Chung Station.
    3. Exit on Exit B and walk towards the Cable Car Terminal for about 200 meters.

Once you reach the Cable Car Terminal, pick up/buy your tickets and proceed to the platform which looks like this! Enjoy the ride until you reach Ngong Ping Village!

Once you fully enjoyed your trip to Ngong Ping, just go back to the platform where you got off earlier. Show your ticket and take the cable car ride back to Tung Chung!

    Buying Cable Car Tickets

Instead of queueing to buy my tickets, I booked my Ngong Ping 360 tickets in advance from an online travel site called Klook. On the day of my visit, I went directly to the counter exclusive for Klook customers and I was avail to redeem my tickets right away.

You can still purchase your tickets at the terminal however there's usually a long queue so I would suggest you buy your tickets online.

    Cable Car Ticket Cost

There are different ticket costs due to different factors such as:

    • Directions: One Way or Round Trip
    • Cabin type: Standard/Crystal (glass-bottom) or Mixed (Crystal Cabin going up and Standard cabin going down)
    • Add-On Options: These vary depending on the promotion but mostly they were meal vouchers, transportation packages, and even eSim packages.

At the time of my booking (2019), there was also a price difference for Hong Kong citizens and Non-Hong Kong Citizens. My cable car ticket cost me AED 111 (around US$30) since I am a non-Hong Kong citizen, I selected a round-trip ticket with a mixed cabin - a glass-bottom cabin going up and a standard cabin going down.

    Cable Car Experience

Compared to our cable car ride in Tbilisi, my cable car experience in Ngong Ping was a smooth experience! Of course, riding the glass-bottom Crystal Cabin gave me a little bit of butterflies in the stomach during the whole cable car ride.

However, the view is absolutely stunning! I thought I already had enough views from my hikes on Hong Kong Island, but boy I was wrong.

The amount of turquoise color of the Pearl River (or Zhujiang in Chinese) surrounding the island is so abundant and pleasant to the eyes.

Another treat during the ride is to witness and see the famous Hong Kongโ€“Zhuhaiโ€“Macau Bridge (famous to me and my mom) which has an undersea tunnel to connect the three cities!

There you go and if you're hesitant to add Ngong Ping into your itinerary, please don't. I actually have a separate post about the Attractions and Highlights of Ngong Ping. Give it a read and I hope you visit it! Ciao!
