As a budget traveler, booking a hotel room was not really my style, and traveling to Africa in general is out of my usual budget. But this one's a treat! I wanted to reward myself for achieving a new personal best in terms of my hiking journey during my pensive journey in Uganda. An overnight stay in a hotel is too short for a review though, so let me share my first impression of the Humura Resorts in Kampala.
Hotel Location
Based on the advice of the Ugandans, Kampala is divided into two main areas, Downtown Kampala, where all the action happens—Old Taxi Park, Owino Market, Mukwano Center—and Uptown Kampala, known for its modern buildings and attractions like Uganda Golf Club, Uganda Museum, and Acacia Mall, a favorite among foreigners. Uptown Kampala is also home to modern and chain hotels, including Humura Resorts.
What makes Humura's location great is its surroundings of lush greenery, numerous dining options, and easy access to transportation. Uber and boda bodas are available around the clock, and bus and matatu terminals are nearby.
The drive to and from Entebbe Airport takes between 40 and 60 minutes, depending on the route. I arranged a one-way private airport transfer through Edwin at the reception of Humura Resorts, which cost me USD 40 / UGX 150,000.
Humura Resorts' Facility & Rooms
Humura Resorts exudes a tropical atmosphere, with lush spaces, wooden touches, and African artworks. It's a boutique hotel with a luxurious feel to it. Though I didn't have time to use the swimming pool or fitness center, such a pity, I did enjoy a simple dinner at the restaurant instead. I sat down on the second floor of the restaurant while enjoying the view of the swimming pool, the garden, and the fitness center.
I booked the lowest room category, the double standard room. It was spacious, decent, and well kept. Adjusting the bed nets was a bit challenging though since I'm not used to them.
The courtyard view with trees as a backdrop from the window was my favorite part. The blackout curtains were helpful, though once drawn, the room became quite dark, making it a bit challenging to find my belongings. But then again, it was my carelessness in throwing my stuff here and there that made them difficult to find lol.
Hotel Cost
Booked through Booking.com once again, this is the cost of my 1-night stay from the platform:
Payment was settled directly at the hotel upon my arrival using a credit card, and no prepayment was required. Similar to my experience in Bushpig Backpackers Hostel, when paying with a credit card, I'm always billed in US Dollars instead of the local currency, Ugandan shillings. My assumption was that card transactions in Uganda, in general, are processed only in US Dollars rather than multiple currencies.
Overall Experience:
When it comes to hospitality, it seemed like the staff were in a friendly competition. Okay maybe not literally, but each of them is trying to outdo the others in providing excellent service.
The staff, including Edwin, Catherine, and Mr. Dimu (if I recall the name correctly), were thoughtful throughout my stay. Edwin assisted me during check-in and with booking my airport transfer, while Catherine was attentive at the restaurant during dinner. Mr. Dimu, the hotel manager, was constantly checking in with every guest, which was a pleasant surprise.
Among the available hotels in Kampala, I found Humura Resorts to be a steal considering its value and worth. Though it did make a dent in my budget (because I'm not rich), I have no regrets about splurging a little for my last night. It was a well-deserved reward. With exhaustion and sleepless nights of the past 5 days - a cozy room and a soft bed were just what I needed.
